This is a critical step for Fredericksburg Main Street Initiative! Virginia Main Street will be the facilitator for the evening. Our vision will be used as the one of our criteria in moving forward with Main Street 4 point approach and projects for Fredericksburg Main Street Initiative.
Our goal is to have a cross section of our stakeholders: business owners representing the restaurant, retail and service, business property owners (large and small), residents (owned and rented), shoppers of downtown, city officials and other organizations.
Homework assignment: Please come with ideas in hand,
- Think about your vision of The Future of Fredericksburg through the 5 Senses. What will downtown revitalization success look, sound, smell, and taste like in the future?

- What will downtown revitalization success feel like emotionally?

Don’t be alarmed if you hear cannon fire, heavy artillery, and gun shots this weekend….we’re not being attacked, it’s the Sesquicentennial of the Battle of Fredericksburg! There are all sorts of events, reenactments, and educational programs going on this weekend, through next week, and into next weekend so something is bound to pique your interest. Visit the official website or the City’s tourism website to learn more.
There is a lot going on at the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Battlefield Park aside from the 150th anniversary. The Park received $1.2 million from the federal government to rehab the visitors centers at the Park location on Lafayette Street and the visitors center at Chancellorsville. Both of these centers contain exhibits original to construction dating back all the way to the 1930s. The Park was the only park in the entire northeast region stretching from Maine to West Virginia to receive funding, so it’s quite an achievement. The new exhibits at both locations will focus less on the actual events of the battles, but the why behind the war and how the south was impacted. Both projects are expected to be complete by next summer.
Do you have buyers looking to purchase in the City of Fredericksburg? If those buyers are low-to-moderate income individuals, they may qualify for a great program run by the City to provide down payment assistance or help with closings costs. The Direct Homeownership Assistance Program was developed to expand homeownership opportunities available to City residents of low- and moderate-income status, those whose incomes do not exceed 80% of the area median income, depending on household size. Assistance will be provided to qualifying households in the form of either payment of specific closing costs and/or up to 50% of down payment costs.
Assistance is also available to qualified households in the form of either the payment of a portion of an existing loan or closings costs to accomplish a refinance of an adjustable/high-rate mortgage to a conventional fixed-rate or equivalent mortgage. All of the homes must be purchased within the City limits (22401 zip code). If you would like more information on this program, please call the City of Fredericksburg at 540-372-1179 or click here to view the City’s program document.
Very quickly the Fredericksburg REALTORS Foundation Art Show will be here. The art show is scheduled for May 12th, 2012 10:00-4:00 at the EXPO Center. As a Governor for the Foundation, I can share with you that quite a bit of time and energy has been volunteered to make this a success. But we are not finished yet!
To give a little background on the event, we must first thank the EXPO Center for allowing us the use of their facilities. Without them, this would not have happened! A huge thank you in advance! Secondly, we have to thank all the area students who have agreed to donate pieces of their art work so that we can sell them and keep the proceeds. Of course our Corporate Sponsors thank you – thank you – thank you!
This is the first year our Foundation has ever attempted something of this size and magnitude. While it is exciting, we are still very nervous about the event and we are hoping that our fellow friends, neighbors and associates will come to the event, and of course support the Foundation by purchasing the art work and help making the event a success.
We must highlight our schools and sponsors. The area High Schools that are participating: Within the City of Fredericksburg – Fredericksburg Christian, James Monroe. Stafford High Schools – Brooke Point, Mountain View, Stafford. Spotsylvania High Schools – Courtland, Massaponax, Riverbend. From King George – King George High School.
Art Show Sponsors, we are very grateful for your support.
