Community Foundation to help nonprofits

Local nonprofit organizations will be competing for up to $100,000 in prizes during the 24-hour Community Give event, sponsored by the Community Foundation of the Rappahannock River Region.

The event, which takes place on May 6, will start at midnight and end at 11:59 p.m. Throughout the day, various cash prizes will be awarded to participating nonprofits, depending on the donations they receive.

“The organization that raises the most money during the event will be awarded a first place grand prize of $10,000. Second place will win $5,000, and third place will win $2,500,” said Lisa Biever, the foundation’s director of donor services.

In addition, $1,500 prizes will be awarded to each locality that participates, and $1,000 will randomly be given away every hour for the entirety of the 24-hour event.

Currently, 41 organizations have registered for the event, while several more have expressed interest in participating. The deadline for organizations to register for the event is April 14.

The event will be held exclusively online, and individuals will be able to donate to the organization of their choice through a simple online process.

“What happens a lot is that smaller organizations may not have as large an online presence as the big national nonprofits,” said Biever. “As a result, they don’t get as many donations because it’s not necessarily as convenient. The Community Give event, however, will make this possible.”

Biever said how much money nonprofits raise during the event will depend on how much excitement they generate.

“Leading up to the event, we are offering training in communications and social media, so that these nonprofits can build up excitement for the event and create a larger online presence,” Biever said.

The event prizes are being given by Community Foundation sponsors such as The Honeywell Charitable Fund, Union First Market Bank and The Robert Cullen O’Neill Memorial Fund.

This will be the largest giving event in the Fredericksburg area, and the first online fundraising event of this scale in the area.

Every dollar raised will go directly to the organizations involved. The Community Fund will not receive any cut of the donations.

“In addition to the $100,000 that we have to give away, we are anticipating a lot of donations to come in during the event,” Biever said. “It’s practically a no-lose scenario.”

During the event, the Community Give website will have a live time tally of the amount of money raised.

“That’s what I’m personally most excited for,” Biever said. “It’s going to be so amazing and wonderful to watch the generosity and support of our community come flooding in.”
